My favourite post format right now

I've been enjoying writing on LinkedIn in November and I've even upped how many times I post from 1 to 2 per day.

There's a reason for that and why I've been able to increase volume without dying, I'll get to that in a minute.

But I still hear so many creators stress over post format.

"Do I need to post carousels?"
"What's the best format for LinkedIn?"
"Will a whiteboard make me go viral?"

Them damn whiteboards.

You could spend hours on end creating carousels and info-graphics in a bid to go viral, just because you heard from some social media growth expert or algorithm obsessed influencer that that's what works best right now.

But it's completely dependent on your goals, which again, I'll come to mine in a minute.

Even if you did go viral with this stuff, would you still find yourself wondering what you're actually getting out of it? And is it worth burning yourself out over? You might even find yourself spending money on outsourcing graphic design or visual content creation.

So now social media content has become something you don't get much out of outside of likes and impressions AND you're spending money on it?

Seems silly to me.

That's why I have a new favourite format of post on LinkedIn.

But it's not even new. It's old. The OG post format that everyone likes to ignore and overlook just because it "doesn't get as much reach".

The truth is you're just not a good copywriter so you mask that with fun, colourful, distracting visuals.

(hard pill to swallow but it's true)

Yes that's right, my favourite post format is text.

Plain, boring, black and white text.

(maybe a pic of myself to add something humanising in)

But I don't even mean long text posts. I mean short ones at around 250 characters, really concise and to the point. Get your point across and get out kinda thing.

Here's why I love them:

  • They get good impressions despite what "THEY" say
  • They're quick to write
  • They're quick to read

I can get my point across to my target audience quicker than a big ass carousel that takes them ages to read. And I spend 15 minutes max on the post vs 60 minutes minimum AND potential cost outsourcing creation.

My goal for LinkedIn right now is not to grow followers or go viral.

It's to get people downloading my new free book The Social Copywriting Bible.

And it's working crazy good.

I'm getting a lot more people reaching out to me than normal to tell me how much they enjoy my content (no metrics to track on this, but just a feeling).

I used to get 10 subs from LinkedIn every day. Now I'm getting 100+ every day.

My email list has grown from around 10.9k to 12.1k in 2 weeks.

I'm starting a lot more potentially interesting conversations with potential customers and clients because of it.

All because of those plain, boring, black and white text posts that everybody seems to hate.

Don't hate on text posts.

Just get better at copywriting.

Cheers,

Matt

If there’s one thing I see on LinkedIn that gives me an instant ick, it’s “experts” telling beginner creators not to schedule posts. Here’s why it annoys me: The biggest challenge for beginner creators isn’t figuring out the perfect time to post or chasing algorithms. It’s staying consistent. But these so-called experts are advising against one of the most effective tools for building consistency: scheduling posts. I'm gonna say this once and only once... (alright, probably will say this...

I haven't messaged you in a few days. Because we had a friend here from England visiting so we were busy having fun and relaxing. That and more important things took over. You know, life :) But the last time I did message you I was harping on about how great short text posts are and how much fun I'm having writing them lately. And while that is true... I was lying to you all week. There's actually a sad truth behind short text posts that I haven't exposed to you because I've been spending my...

Got a friend from England visiting this week and we done a cheeky pilates session together this morning. Nothing like destroying your legs and having wobbly knees for the rest of the weekend 👍🏼 Yesterday I showed you how I write simple, 250 character text posts. I've been blabbing on it a lot the last couple days, because I can't get over how simple they are and what brilliant results I'm seeing from them. That doesn't mean to say carousels and big, all singing all dancing visual creative...
