This week was election week in the US and unless you were living under a rock then you know Donald Trump won for the second time, becoming just the second president in history to be defeated then re-elected the following term.
As you know by now, I don't write to you every day to give you news updates.
I don't even watch mainstream news.
Instead, I write to you every day to help you become a better social copywriter so you can make more money for your business.
But because it is election week and because Trumpy (as my mother-in-law calls him) is back in power, I've been thinking a lot about why Trumpy's election campaigns work so well, what about his marketing is so powerful and why do so many people rally around him so passionately.
Like I said, I don't pay attention to all this stuff that closely.
But I get enough filtering through to my hazel coloured eyeballs to get an idea of why.
So I wanted to share my 7 thoughts on why Donald Trump's election campaigns have been so successful and how we can leverage that to write copy.
This will be very concise. I'm gonna give you one lesson and one way to apply it. Because I want you to be able to action this quickly (today, ideally) and not make this about Trumpy, but about the copywriting.
Anywho, let's go...
1. Identify and align with a common enemy
The lesson: Trump identified common concerns (often cast as “enemies”) that resonated with large parts of his audience, such as political elites or economic instability.
How to apply it: Find the “enemy” in your market—maybe it’s a frustrating industry norm, a widespread challenge, or a misconception about your niche. Address it directly in your copy to show your audience you’re on their side and committed to overcoming it together.
2. Create simple, powerful slogans/language
The lesson: Slogans like “Make America Great Again” used simple, powerful words that could be easily remembered and repeated.
How to apply it: Keep slogans and key messaging short, clear, and emotionally charged. Identify the core benefit of your offer and express it in a way that’s instantly recognizable and relatable.
3. Speak the language of your audience
The lesson: Trump’s speech at rallies was direct, conversational and avoided jargon, making his message easy to understand and relate to.
How to apply it: Write as if you’re having a one-on-one conversation with your target audience. Avoid complex language or buzzwords that might create distance—use words and phrases they’d naturally use themselves.
4. Position yourself as the solution
The lesson: Trump didn’t just identify problems; he positioned himself as the singular solution, promising to “fix” what was broken.
How to apply it: After presenting your audience’s problem, frame your product or service as the ideal solution. Be confident in your offering and highlight how it directly addresses their needs, showing why you’re uniquely equipped to help.
5. Build urgency and anticipation
The lesson: By outlining the potential “doom” if his solutions weren’t adopted, Trump created urgency in his audience to act.
How to apply it: Emphasize what your audience stands to lose if they don’t take action. Use phrases that convey time sensitivity or limited availability to prompt quicker responses and engagement.
6. Repetition and consistency
The lesson: Trump repeated his core messages consistently across every platform and rally, reinforcing them until they became almost synonymous with his identity.
How to apply it: Identify 2-3 core messages or benefits of your offer and repeat them across your copy to reinforce their importance. Consistent repetition helps your message sink in and stick with your audience.
7. Use relatable stories and examples:
The lesson: Trump often shared anecdotes that illustrated his points, using them to make abstract ideas more tangible and relatable.
How to apply it: Use real stories—either from your experiences or from clients—to create a narrative that readers can connect with. Stories help make your brand memorable and increase trust.
TL;DR
To make your copy more powerful:
1. Align with your audience by addressing their common challenges
2. Use simple slogans/languaging
3. Speak directly and plainly
4. Position your offer as the best solution
5. Create urgency
6. Repeat key messages
7. Use relatable stories
Put these all together and it will help your messaging to resonate, stick and ultimately lead to conversions.
Is Trump a good guy?
I’ll leave that to you.
But does his team’s copywriting work?
Yep, it absolutely does.
