How to get your first (or next) 1,000 LinkedIn followers


Yesterday I showed you just how powerful and game changing building a LinkedIn audience has been for my one person copywriting business AND for my personal development.

If you're a solopreneur or one person agency, wondering how you can grow your business and make more money, building a LinkedIn audience would be my suggestion (and is exactly what I did to grow my business to over $600k revenue and drive over $2M for clients).

With a LinkedIn audience, your life becomes a hell of a lot easier in multiple ways.

  • It makes sales easier and faster because you're building trust through your content, not through numerous stages of outbound messages and discovery calls.
  • It creates social proof that you know your stuff, because when people can see that you have 10,000s of followers reading what you say day in day out, they instantly trust you as a more credible source than those with 100s of followers (this is just human nature, I'm afraid).
  • It allows you to test ideas and get feedback rapidly, in real time, because you can easily see if Post A gets 700 likes but Post B gets 7 likes, Post A is a topic / idea / problem / solution that more people are interested in.

Now you know how powerful a LinkedIn audience is and you know that this is something you need to prioritise as a solopreneur or one person agency...

It's just a case of building one. So, here's how you can start building yours and get your first (or next) 1,000 followers on LinkedIn:

Step 1. Decide who you need in your audience

There's a camp online who will tell you to "just start" and while that is true, you literally won't get anywhere until you "just start", it's better for you to have an idea of who you want your audience to comprise of.

Why?

Here's an example:

Say you run an outbound agency. Your customers and clients are CEOs and Founders of SaaS startups. Those are the people you want in your audience, seeing your content, building trust with you.

Because, ultimately, they're the ones who will buy from you.

They're the ones who will have a deep and vested interest in what you have to say, which will make your content more relevant to your audience and get more engagement as a result.

This is who you need in your audience.

And that brings us on to the next step...

Step 2. Proactively find them every day

Now you know who you need in your audience, all you need to do to start building your LinkedIn audience is just...finding them.

The best and most easiest way to do that (and is exactly how I started building my audience with people who I needed):

  • Go to the search bar in LinkedIn
  • Type "founder" or "CEO" whatever their position is
  • Filter by People
  • Filter by the Industry they're in

And hey presto, you'll have a shortlist of 10,000s of people who you need in your audience.

Step 3. Reach out in a non-annoying way

Here's where you gotta strap on your big boy pants and put yourself out there.

The good thing is, you're not reaching out and pitching these people with your services or offer. You don't want them to buy from you right now. That's not the point.

You want them to join your LinkedIn network. That's it.

That means the only goal here is for you to get them to accept your connection request.

So all you're going to do here is:

  • Click on their profile
  • Make sure they're someone you need in your audience
  • Click Connect + Add Note

And in the note, here's what you're going to say (I'll use my message to Luka, as pictured above, as an example):

"Hey Luka, hope you're good.
I help founders of marketing agencies grow faster on LinkedIn using Social Copywriting.
I post content every day on here around 3pm EEST, usually with copywriting tips, strategies and techniques to grow faster.
Thought it would be useful/interesting to you.
Hopefully see you around.
Cheers, Matt"

This is the exact message I used to build my LinkedIn audience which is seen daily by 1,000s of founders of marketing based businesses.

You'll see you're not pitching anything except...yourself.

And if you and what you do/post about is interesting to them, they'll accept and join your audience.

If it isn't, then you don't want them in your audience anyway.

Win win.

Step 4. Repeat this until you die

I'm being dramatic, but seriously:

Do this every single day.

Make this task a daily non-negotiable. Create a template for your message. Max out your connection requests.

Do this every single day.

This is the exact method I used to get my first 1,000 LinkedIn followers (and a whole lot more) for the first 12 months of building on LinkedIn.

I used it then and I still use it now.

Except now, I have the audience of 159k where I can post content that generates 100s or 1,000s of new followers every day. Which means I don't need to be as proactive.
