How I write simple, 250 character text posts

I professed my love for text posts on social to you yesterday and in my opinion, it's for good reason too. You can't beat a short, snappy text post on social.

You save time as the writer, the reader saves time and gets their dopamine fix.

And we all move on with our day.

But a lot of creators struggle to write short text posts, because it requires a level of conciseness that they just can't do.

I'm not making this up, either.

I've worked closely with over 50 business owners over the last three years.

The biggest, most common problem they all share is they can't write concisely.

Quick one - did you see I released a new book?

So much of the work I do with my clients is getting them to say exactly what they're saying, just with 75% less words.

Because so much of being a fantastic copywriter is the ability to say less.

Say less, create deeper impact.

But writing like this is one the hardest skill to master. It's one of the reasons journalists get paid mega bucks because they can write so efficiently that every single word, counts.

Nothing goes to waste.

So, how do I write simple, 250 character text posts?

Short, concise social posts that:

  • Grab people's attention
  • Deliver an interesting idea
  • Educate and entertain all at once

I'll tell you.

First, I've written 1,000s of pieces of content. I've done it every single day for 3 years. And my fingers and brain almost go into autopilot. I'm ruthless with my full stops. I'm ruthless with the words I choose. It's become automatic. You can't skip this part and practice absolutely makes (almost) perfect.

Second, I get inspired and create templates.

Yep, I still do it, even after that many writing reps.

Here's my simple 5 step process I've been using lately:

  1. Head over to Twitter
  2. Find a creator I like
  3. Take a short post that performed well
  4. Strip it down to create a skeleton
  5. Write my own ideas into it

That's it.

Here's proof of it in action...

My version:

Nothing a like, right?

Just a few words shared. But the idea is completely my own.

Simple, short text posts rule baby.

I love 'em right now.

What do ya think?

Cheers,

Matt

If there’s one thing I see on LinkedIn that gives me an instant ick, it’s “experts” telling beginner creators not to schedule posts. Here’s why it annoys me: The biggest challenge for beginner creators isn’t figuring out the perfect time to post or chasing algorithms. It’s staying consistent. But these so-called experts are advising against one of the most effective tools for building consistency: scheduling posts. I'm gonna say this once and only once... (alright, probably will say this...

I haven't messaged you in a few days. Because we had a friend here from England visiting so we were busy having fun and relaxing. That and more important things took over. You know, life :) But the last time I did message you I was harping on about how great short text posts are and how much fun I'm having writing them lately. And while that is true... I was lying to you all week. There's actually a sad truth behind short text posts that I haven't exposed to you because I've been spending my...

Got a friend from England visiting this week and we done a cheeky pilates session together this morning. Nothing like destroying your legs and having wobbly knees for the rest of the weekend 👍🏼 Yesterday I showed you how I write simple, 250 character text posts. I've been blabbing on it a lot the last couple days, because I can't get over how simple they are and what brilliant results I'm seeing from them. That doesn't mean to say carousels and big, all singing all dancing visual creative...
